Historic London Town and Gardens is a special place -- the National Historic Landmark William Brown House, the lovely four-season woodland garden, the Glass Pavilion overlooking the South River, and the state's largest archaeological dig, which is uncovering the colonial port town of London.

London Town is also a unique and busy educational institution, where children from around the state come to learn about Tidewater Maryland history and horticulture, and to experience colonial living and hands-on archaeology. Adult visitors learn too, from trained docents, lectures and workshops, and monthly public archaeology dig days.

Historic London Town and Gardens is a partnership between Anne Arundel County, which owns the park, and the non-profit London Town Foundation, which manages and interprets the site and raises money for its support and development.

Nearly two-thirds of the Foundation's annual budget comes from income earned from site rental, grants and contributions, and individual and corporate memberships.

London Town's members value its history and it’s archaeological and horticultural resources. They understand the importance of educating young people in the history and values of the past. And they know that some of the best educational experiences occur outside the formal classroom, in a place like London Town.

You, too, can help meet the educational goals of Historic London Town and Gardens by becoming a member of the London Town Foundation.

At the Doorway of History

Looks Backward - and Forward

In 2002, we erected on its original site the Lord Mayor's Tenement, a 20' by 20' wooden dwelling with its adjacent garden and yard.

Here we can:

  • Give visual representation to the archaeological work conducted at the site for so many years
  • Demonstrate how ordinary people lived their lives in an urban setting in the first half of the eighteenth century
  • Place the beautiful William Brown House in its context as an exceptional building among the utilitarian, earthfast structures

You can imagine the learning opportunities for children in our school programs, as well as new experiences for visitors to the site as the reconstructed colonial town takes shape.

In 2002, we began construction of the Visitor's Center and Museum.

This facility will:

  • Help tie together the many features of Historic London Town and Gardens, providing a more unified experience and highlighting the unique features of this lovely place
  • Be the first museum in the Capital City area to tell the story of how land and water transportation helped build the entrepreneurial spirit in colonial Maryland

This new facility is a key component of the Annapolis, London Town, and South County Heritage Area Management Plan and will enhance London Town's role as a heritage tourism destination and Chesapeake Bay Gateway Site.

On-going Programs

  • Thousands of school children come to LondonTown to learn about colonial living, to explore the local flora and fauna in our Science in the Garden Program, and to do hands-on archaeology with the staff of the Lost Towns Project
  • Our historical horticulture program continues to expand, with seasonal crops of vegetables and herbs grown from heirloom seeds, as well as new plantings of Chinese and Japanese tree peonies in the gardens surrounding the Glass Pavilion
  • Archaeologists from the Lost Towns Project continue to excavate remains of the historic port town, and will examine any new discoveries as town reconstruction takes place
  • Docents continue to interpret the William Brown House to appreciative visitors from all over the United States, while the house is also the setting for displays such as the "Samples Old and New" needlework exhibit
  • Special events, including the traditional Afternoon Teas, and new ones such as lectures on the History of Maryland, are open to the public
